At IJM Regent’s general body meeting in November, I presented information on sex trafficking within the United States. Below is the information presented. I hope this empowers you to fight and pray for the victims of this slavery.
Recruiters of sex slaves in America: Escort services, bars, brothels, Mafia, US Servicemen (mainly in Asia), Pimps in malls or clubs
Who is being trafficked?: 14,500 to 17,500 foreigners trafficked to the US each year. These women are promised jobs and then are forced into sexual exploitation. America youth are also at risk. 350,000 youth in the US are considered to be at risk (mainly due to inner city poverty). There are roughly 199,000 known cases of sexual exploitation of American youth per year.
Root causes of trafficking: Vulnerability- Economic disadvantages, poverty, emotional dependencies, drug/alcohol dependencies, age, gender inequality and areas of high crime
Traffickers use tactics like isolation, controlling the money, drug/alcohol dependencies and physical and sexual violence to keep control over these women.
Some of these women are known to have relationships with their pimp/boss. 20% of international women trafficking within the US have an intimate relationship with thier trafficker. 28% of American women trafficking within the US have an intimate relationship with their trafficker. Alarmingly, their trafficker could be thier boyfriend or husband.
Some health effects these women have are: STD’s, high amount of abortions, broken bones, depression, anger/rage, and suicide
What is being done about this?: Trafficking Victims Protection Act- first established in 2000 and revised in 2003 and 2005. A full and in-depth explanation of this Act can be found at http://www.humantrafficking.org
